  • 2008 Oui Deux Syrah - Wahluke Slope

    18.5+/20—Review of Washington Wines / January 2012

Composed of 95% Stone Tree Syrah co-fermented with 5% Francisca’s Vineyard Viognier, this exhibits a purplish ruby color and a perfumed nose of raspberries, blueberries and cassis, with scents of crushed roses, garrigue (French lavender), violets and cracked pepper. The flavors are well saturated, intermixed with dark chocolate, black licorice, Wahluke scorched earth and espresso. The back picks up macerated dark fruits and touches of leather, roasted nuts, dried orange peel, cinnamon bark and spices on a chewy tannin finish. For direct purity of Syrah, this gets a plus. 18.5+/20 points.

    91 Points—Wine Advocate / September 2011

The 2008 Oui Deux Syrah was co-fermented with 5% Viognier and aged for 20 months in 50% new oak. Earthy minerals, brier, wild blueberries, and pepper inform the nose of a savory, sweetly-fruited, layered, incipiently complex wine with enough structure to blossom for 2-3 years. It will be at its best from 2012 to 2020.

The wines made with Bordeaux grapes begin with the 2008 Merlot which contains 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, and 4% Malbec that was aged for 20 months in French and American oak. It is a pleasant but hardly profound effort that offers up ample spicy fruit, good depth and concentration, and some succulence. Drink this solid effort over the next 6-8 years.

    18.5/20 points—Review of Washington Wines / September

Barrel-fermented, this wine displays a brilliant gold color, with aromas of pear, peach, citrus, honeysuckle and orange blossoms.
